The Korean Culture I Love Presentation Contest

 

1. Topic: The Korean Culture I Love

 

2. Eligibility:

- Middle and high school students enrolled in Korean classes or Korean culture classes

- If you attended school in Korea, you must have attended school in the United States for at least four years.     

- Korean class / Korean culture class teacher must submit a recommendation form for the student through the teacher's Google form.

 

3. Required Documents:

- Teacher's Recommendation Form (Due by 4/27)

- Student Application, Essay Script, PPT Script (Due by 4/27) (Kindly ensure that you submit the documents using your personal email address, rather than your school domain email.)

- Candidates who pass the script evaluation are required to submit their finalized presentation materials (in Powerpoint, Google Slides, or PDF format) by June 15th to chungsarah.kecla@gmail.com (Kindly ensure that you submit the documents using your personal email address, rather than your school domain email.)

 

4. Award Category:

- Hangul Grand Award (1st): $500 Scholarship + Certificate of Student Interpreter

- King Sejong Award (2nd): $300 Scholarship + Certificate of Student Interpreter 

- Hunminjungeum Award (3rd): $100 Scholarship + Certificate of Student Ambassador for Korean Culture

- Jiphyeonjeon Award (Honorable Mention): $TBA Gift Car + Certificate 

- Winners will be given the opportunity to serve as interpreters and public relations ambassadors at KECLA-hosted and sponsored events.

 

5. Selection Process and Review Criteria:

(1st Review: Script Evaluation 50 pts)

  • 15 finalists will be selected based on scores from document evaluation.
  • Essay Script for the presentation on "Promoting Korean Culture I Love" (2 pages or less, written in Korean or English, handwritten or typed using a word processor)
  • Presentation Script for the visual presentation on "Promoting Korean Culture I Love" (Visual PowerPoint, Google Slides, or PDF format that aligns with the script content)
  • Korean language class grade (average score since the Fall semester of the 2024 academic year)
  • Korean language class teacher's letter of recommendation
  • Number of years enrolled in the Korean language class

(Final Review: PPT: Presentation Evaluation 50 pts)

  • Format: 5-minute presentation (in English or Korean, with additional points awarded for the proportion of Korean used)
  • Presentation materials: Finalists must submit the final version of the presentation materials (PowerPoint, Google Slides, or PDF) by June 15 via email (chungsarah.kecla@gmail.com), which corresponds to the script content, for a 5-minute presentation. (Kindly ensure that you submit the documents using your personal email address, rather than your school domain email.)
  • Evaluation Criteria: Presentation content and structure, clarity and accuracy, attitude
  • Additional points will be awarded based on the proportion of Korean used, and the top winners will receive a student interpreter appointment certificate.
  • After the last participant's presentation, the scores will be tallied, and the evaluation results and awards will be announced.
  • The finalists will be ranked based on the presentation evaluation (preliminary registration not considered).

 

6. Deadlines and Schedule:

  • April 27 (SUN): application & scripts deadline
  • May 23 (Fri): Script review result announcement  
  • June 15 (SUN): Final Candidates presentation material submission (PowerPoint, Google Slide, PDF)
  • June 28 (Sat): Presentation review and awards (at KECLA)

How to Prepare for the Contest

- Essay Script

  • Promotion Presentation Script about Korean Culture I Love
  • Double-Spaced, 2 pages or less, Times New Roman font, font size 12
  • Written in either Korean or English (Bonus points will be given based on the proportion of content written in Korean)
  • The Korean part may be handwritten
  • If handwritten, scan it and upload the PDF file to the Student Google Form
  • File name: First Name_Last Name_School

- PPT: Presentation PPT Script

  • PowerPoint, Google Slides, or PDF format presentation materials consistent with the script content
  • To avoid complications when using institutional devices in the final round, refrain from using animations or special effects
  • Acceptable file formats: PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF
  • File name: First Name_Last Name_School

 

(Final Review  – Presentation Evaluation 50 pts)

6/28 Sat 1 PM – 4 PM @ KECLA

Presentation material:

  • Candidates who successfully pass the first round are required to submit their finalized presentation materials by June 15th to chungsarah.kecla@gmail.com (Kindly ensure that you submit the documents using your personal email address, rather than your school domain email.)
  • Date of Presentation: Saturday, June 28, 1 PM – 4 PM @ Korean Education Center in LA
  • All the participants must use the KECLA device. Therefore, please refrain from using effects and animation.
  • Freely describe your favorite aspect of Korean culture
  • Presentation in either English or Korean (Bonus points will be given based on the proportion of Korean used)
  • Use of costumes or props is allowed

   - Contest Format:

  • Format: 5-minute presentation (Cannot exceed 7 min, including preparation and exit.)  
  • Introduce and promote the Korean culture you love as if you are explaining it to people without knowledge of Korean culture.
  • Present in English or Korean (Extra points applied depending on the ratio of Korean used.)
  • You can use costumes and props.  

  - Evaluation Criteria:

  • Presentation content and structure, clarity and accuracy of delivery, attitude.
  • Bonus points will be applied based on the proportion of Korean used, and top winners will receive a student interpreter appointment certificate.
  • After the final participant presentation, scores will be tallied, and the results will be announced with awards.
