LA Korean Education Center Hosts Korean Culture and History Experience for FSD Federation Club

  • 25 students from Fullerton School District’s K-pop dance club participate in a Korean culture and history experience

The LA Korean Education Center (Director: Kang Jeon-hoon) announced that on February 7 (Friday), students from the Fullerton School District K-pop Dance Club visited the center to participate in traditional crafts and Nanta (Korean percussion performance) experiences, as well as a tour of the Korean history exhibition hall.

The club, comprised of students from five middle schools, aims to go beyond simply learning K-pop dance techniques by incorporating knowledge of Korean culture and history into their performances. As part of this initiative, students engaged in traditional crafts, Nanta drumming, and historical experiences, deepening their understanding of Korean heritage. This program was made possible with funding support from the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education.

Ellanae, a student who participated in the Nanta class, shared, “Playing the drum felt similar to dancing K-pop, and performing together with friends was incredibly fun.” Meanwhile, another student, Jalane, commented, “The process of making a traditional patchwork plum blossom scroll was complicated, but the teacher’s explanation made it easy to follow. The final piece was so beautiful that I want to hang it in my home.”

Phil Ling, a director from Fullerton School District, expressed his thoughts, saying, “Through the traditional crafts class, we were able to appreciate the delicate intricacies of Korean culture. The powerful rhythm and energy of the drum performance reminded me of K-pop choreography, and the history exhibition allowed us to understand Korea from past to present, making it a truly meaningful experience.”

Director Kang Jeon-hoon of the LA Korean Education Center remarked, “It is fulfilling to see students, who initially joined the club due to their love for K-pop, expand their interest in Korean culture through experiences like Nanta drumming and traditional crafts, as well as learning about Korean history. The education center will continue its efforts to ensure that interest in K-pop and K-dramas leads to a deeper understanding and appreciation of Korea’s rich traditions and history.”
